SUMMARY:Real-Rootedness via Pendant Extensions and Clique Graphs
DESCRIPTION:The independent set sequences of graphs have been widely studied\, but only recently have analogous questions been considered for strong independent set sequences of hypergraphs. We develop two tools to prove and preserve the real-rootedness of strong independence polynomials. The first is a pendant-edge transform for uniform pendant hyperedge attachments; it preserves real-rootedness when one or two pendant hyperedges are attached at each vertex\, and this range is sharp. The second uses clique graphs and a theorem of Chudnovsky and Seymour on real-rootedness of independence polynomials of claw-free graphs to prove that any finite hypergraph in which every vertex lies in at most two hyperedges has a real-rooted strong independence polynomial. For linear hypertrees\, this degree condition exactly characterizes when the clique graph is claw-free. \nLearn more at the Math Table website.

SUMMARY:What are globally valued fields?
DESCRIPTION:Given a projective tuple of rational numbers (q_1:\dots:q_n) a basic measure of complexity is its height\, defined as \log \max_i |q_i|\, when (q_1\,\dots\,q_n) are integers generating the unit ideal. Heights are fundamental in the study of diophantine equations\, paralleling the other important notions in number theory\, e.g. valuations or derivations on fields. A globally valued field is a field with an abstract notion of complexity of projective tuples\, satisfying suitable axioms. These were defined by Ben Yaacov and Hrushovski and are closely related to M-fields of Gubler and adelic curves of Chen and Moriwaki. I will talk about various examples of these structures and we will relate them to product formulas. Many features of global fields generalise to globally valued fields – there are variants of geometry of numbers\, heights of cycles (say Faltings heights)\, equidistribution. If time permits I will talk about a joint work with Nuno Hultberg and Antoine Sedillot\, where we use these features to study arithmetic Siu inequality for globally valued fields over globally valued fields extending function fields. \n\nGo to http://people.math.harvard.edu/~demarco/AlgebraicDynamics/ for more information

SUMMARY:Ahlfors Lecture Series: Mohammed Abouzaid
DESCRIPTION:Register to Attend In-Person\nRegister to Attend Virtually\n  \nJoin us for a reception following the September 16th lecture from 5:15 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the The Austine & Chilton McDonnell Common Room on the fourth floor of the Science Center. \n\nSeptember 16:\nFramed bordism and nearby Lagrangians\n\nThe problem of understanding Lagrangian embeddings in symplectic manifolds remains a mystery. The simplest class of symplectic manifolds are the cotangent bundles of smooth manifolds\, which is the setting for the most prominent open problem in the subject: Arnold’s nearby Lagrangian conjecture which asserts the connectedness of the space of Lagrangians for which the relative class of the symplectic form vanishes. In particular\, the conjecture asserts that all such submanifolds are diffeomorphic. In view of recent work with Alvarez-Gavela\, Courte\, and Kragh\, as well as work of Procelli and Smith\, I will use the question as a motivation for joint work with Andrew Blumberg on a bordism-theoretic approach to define bordism-valued refinements of Floer homology. \n\nSeptember 17:\nComplex bordism and Hamiltonian fibrations\n\nAs a consequence of his theory of weights\, Deligne proved that smooth complex projective varieties\, carrying a smooth morphism to the projective line\, have rational cohomology groups that are isomorphic to the tensor product of the cohomology of the fibre with that of the base. In joint work with McLean and Smith\, we show that the result not only holds for symplectic manifolds\, but is in fact a consequence of an analogous result that holds for complex cobordism. The proof identifies bordism of “stably complex derived orbifolds” as the correct framework in which to formulate these results\, and I will discuss joint work with Shaoyun Bai to understand these bordism groups. \nSpeaker Bio: Mohammed Abouzaid is a Professor of Mathematics at Stanford University. He completed his Ph.D. at the University of Chicago in 2007. His primary research interest is in structures arising from studying Floer theory on Symplectic manifolds\, as well as their applications. Mohammed has received awards such as the Invited ICM Lecture (2014) and New Horizons Prize (2017). \nAbout the Ahlfors Lecture Series: The Ahlfors Lecture Series is presented by the Harvard University Math Department in memory of our distinguished colleague\, Professor Lars Ahlfors.
